A suitcase is the one piece of travel equipment that gets thrown, stacked, rained on and compressed on every single trip, usually while nobody is watching. Most of the time it survives. The problem is the one time it does not: a cracked shell on the carousel, a zip that splits in the hold, a wheel that snaps on the way to the gate, or wet clothes after an hour on a tarmac in the rain. Each of those costs more than money. It costs the first day of the trip.
This guide, updated for the 2026/27 travel season, sets out five reasons why a durable hard-shell suitcase is worth paying for, and what "durable" actually means in material and construction terms. The examples come from two Peli families we sell: the Peli Air TRVL cases built on the HPX² protective-case platform, and the Peli ATX hard-case suitcases moulded from a polypropylene blend. Reason 1: A shell that absorbs impact instead of cracking
Ordinary hard suitcases are usually thin ABS or polycarbonate shells closed with a zip. They look rigid in the shop and crack at the corners after a season of baggage belts. A durable suitcase starts with a different shell.
HPX² polymer (Peli Air). The Peli Air 1535 and Air 1615 are moulded from Peli's HPX² high-performance polymer, which is up to 40% lighter than traditional hard-case materials and is tested to MIL-SPEC standards for shock, vibration and pressure. The case flexes under a blow and returns to shape instead of splitting. The same shell is rated IP67, which means it has been tested submerged to one metre for 30 minutes without water reaching the interior.
Polypropylene blend with Peli Armor construction (Peli ATX). The ATX HC22, HC25 and HC30 are moulded from a proprietary polypropylene blend using Peli Armor construction, the same engineering discipline Peli applies to its Protector and Storm cases. The result is a shell with high resistance to impact, crushing pressure and rough handling, and it keeps its shape where ordinary suitcases dent.
Both families share one design decision that matters more than any material: there is no zip. The lid closes onto the base with a sealed rim and latches. A zip seam is the most common failure point in premium luggage, and it is also the easiest to force open with a pen. Removing it removes both problems at once.
Reason 2: The contents stay dry, clean and in one piece

- Perimeter seal. The Peli Air cases carry a waterproof O-ring seal around the full perimeter of the lid, which is what earns the IP67 rating. The ATX suitcases use a sealed hard-sided shell that protects the contents against water and dust, so a case left on a wet apron does not deliver wet clothes.
- Automatic pressure equalization valve. On the Peli Air 1535, 1535 TRVL and 1615 TRAVEL, a self-regulating valve balances the air pressure inside the case with the cabin or hold as the aircraft climbs and descends. This prevents vacuum lock, so the lid opens normally on arrival, and it stops moist air being drawn into the case when the temperature drops.
- Crush resistance. A sealed clamshell does not depend on a frame or a zip to hold its shape, so a case at the bottom of a stack carries the load on the shell, not on your laptop screen.
- A fixed place for fragile items. The Air 1615 TRAVEL has an integrated lid organizer for a laptop, documents and adapters, plus removable fabric pouches for clothing. The ATX cases use a removable structured liner with compartments and compression elements, so the contents do not shift in transit.

Reason 3: Light enough to use the airline's allowance for your things
Durability used to mean weight. It no longer has to. The Peli Air 1535 TRVL weighs 4.7 kg empty and measures 55.8 × 35.5 × 22.8 cm, which fits the cabin limits of most major airlines. The ATX HC22 weighs 4.8 kg empty (5.9 kg with its liner) at 55.9 × 35.6 × 23.1 cm, with a 30-litre interior sized for a three- to five-day trip. Handling is the other half of ease of use:
- Wheels. The ATX series rolls on four 360-degree Hinomoto spinner wheels, a Japanese wheel system used across high-end luggage that does not flat-spot or squeal on cobbles, marble or carpet. The Peli Air cases use quiet inline stainless-steel bearing wheels that track straight under load.
- Handles. Telescopic trolley handles lock at multiple heights on both families. The Air 1535 adds a fold-down over-moulded side handle for pulling the case out of an overhead compartment at an angle.
- Latches. Peli's Press and Pull latches close securely without a key and open in one motion, which is useful at the security belt. The ATX cases use zinc-alloy latches with integrated TSA locks.
- Organisation. The 1615 TRAVEL's lid organizer puts the laptop and documents where you can reach them without unpacking. The ATX liner lifts out entirely for cleaning or replacement.
One honest note on the large end of the range: the ATX HC30 weighs 9.93 kg empty. That is the price of a 90-litre Peli Armor shell, and it needs to be budgeted against the airline's checked-bag weight limit before you pack.
Reason 4: One purchase instead of a new suitcase every two years
We wrote separately about the cheapest travel suitcases and whether saving on one pays off. The short version: a cheap case fails at the zip, the wheel or the corner, usually within a few seasons of frequent travel, and the replacement cost repeats. A durable suitcase is designed to stop that cycle.
- Guarantee. The Peli Air 1535 and Air 1615 TRAVEL are backed by Peli's limited lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship.
- No consumable weak point. With no zip, there is no seam to wear out, and the latches are metal rather than moulded plastic tabs.
- Serviceable interior. The ATX removable liner can be taken out and replaced; the Air 1535's interior can be reconfigured with foam, padded dividers or the TrekPak system as your needs change, so the case outlives the purpose you bought it for.
- Resale and reuse. A shell that still looks and works like new after years is a case you can hand down or sell on, which a cracked polycarbonate shell is not.
The initial price is higher. Over the number of trips a frequent traveller makes in five years, it is usually the lower total.

Reason 5: Security that does not depend on a zip pull
Luggage security has two parts: keeping other people out, and letting airport security in without damage.
- Integrated TSA locks. The Peli Air 1535 TRVL has two integrated TSA-approved combination locks; the 1615 TRAVEL has built-in TSA combination locks; the ATX HC22, HC25 and HC30 use latches with integrated TSA locks made from zinc alloy. Security staff can open the case with their key and close it again without cutting anything, and you keep the combination.
- Padlock protectors. The Peli Air 1535 and 1615 TRAVEL carry stainless-steel padlock protectors on the hasps, so you can add your own padlock at the destination.
- No zip to force. A sealed, latched shell cannot be opened with a ballpoint pen the way a zipped case can, and the latches have to be released deliberately, one at a time.
- Identification. A recessed business-card holder on the Peli Air cases makes it easier to prove ownership and to tell identical cases apart on the carousel.

If you fly carry-on only, choose between the 1535 TRVL (protective-case platform, IP67, lightest) and the HC22 (suitcase-style liner, Hinomoto spinners). If you check a bag, the 1615 TRAVEL is the choice when the contents are fragile or expensive; the HC25 and HC30 are the choice when volume for clothing comes first. Frequently asked questions
Is a hard-shell suitcase really stronger than a good soft one?
A thin ABS shell with a zip is not. A moulded HPX² or Peli Armor polypropylene shell with a sealed rim and metal latches is: it carries stacking loads on the shell, keeps water out, and has no zip seam to split. Material and construction matter more than the words "hard" or "soft".
Will a Peli case fit the overhead locker on low-cost airlines?
