ITA Airways Cabin Baggage – Dimensions, Weight and Packing

For the 2026/27 season, ITA Airways states that your main cabin bag may measure up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm and weigh up to 8 kg, and that you may add one personal item of 30 × 40 × 15 cm. Some older materials from the carrier still show other figures, so the allowance on your own booking always has the final word. This guide is updated for winter 2026/27 and summer 2027 trips.

ITA Airways cabin baggage – current dimensions, weight and number of pieces

On its dedicated hand luggage page, ITA Airways states 55 × 40 × 23 cm and a maximum of 8 kg for the standard cabin piece. Everything that protrudes counts towards the dimensions – wheels, handles and external pockets included. A suitcase sold as 'cabin size' is therefore not automatically compliant, and a soft backpack stuffed to the brim easily exceeds the permitted depth. Other airlines use other figures – Ryanair's cabin baggage rules are a good example.

The personal item may measure up to 30 × 40 × 15 cm: a small handbag, a compact backpack or a laptop bag. It belongs under the seat in front of you and holds documents, phone, chargers, medication and a laptop. The 8 kg applies to the main cabin piece; for the personal item the page publishes dimensions but no separate kilogram limit. That is not total freedom – the bag must stay genuinely small and fit under the seat.

The carrier's materials are not entirely consistent: the hand luggage page shows 55 × 40 × 23 cm, while parts of the FAQ still contain a 55 × 35 × 25 cm layout. Use the current hand luggage page as the reference and compare it with your ticket confirmation and 'My Bookings'. If your ticket shows a different figure, that figure takes precedence.

Baggage type Currently published limit Weight limit Place in the cabin
Main cabin bag 55 × 40 × 23 cm up to 8 kg overhead locker
Personal item 30 × 40 × 15 cm no separate limit stated on the current page under the seat in front of you

ITA Airways hand luggage and personal item explained

Economy Light, Economy or Business – when does the fare change your cabin baggage limit?

Economy Light does not mean travelling with only a small bag under the seat: in the carrier's current materials the Light fare still includes a personal accessory and the main cabin bag, but no standard checked baggage. If everything fits in a cabin suitcase up to 8 kg and a small personal item, you do not have to pay for a checked bag. In standard Economy you usually get one cabin piece up to 8 kg and one checked piece up to 23 kg on many routes, while Premium Economy and Business give larger checked allowances.

Some higher classes and routes include two cabin pieces of up to 8 kg each. That is not a combined 16 kg to split freely: one suitcase of 11 kg and another of 5 kg does not satisfy the rule. Treat the class name as a hint and check the ticket, 'My Bookings' and the ITA Airways baggage calculator, which takes route, class and fare into account. Infants on a lap and children aged 2 to 11 have separate rules tied to the ticket type, so on a family trip check each person individually.

Which Peli case or bag for ITA Airways – a model-by-model table

The dimensions below are the external figures from the Peli product pages. The cabin-size cases are listed at about 55.8–55.9 cm in height, slightly above the 55 cm figure ITA Airways publishes, and the HC22 at 23.1 cm in depth. Do not treat any of them as a guaranteed fit: measure the case you own with its wheels and check your booking. The larger cases are check-in sizes.

Model External size Empty weight Best for
Peli ATX HC22 55.9 × 35.6 × 23.1 cm 4.8 kg hard-shell cabin case for 3–5 days, 30 L
Peli Air 1535 TRVL 55.8 × 35.5 × 22.8 cm 4.7 kg light cabin case with TSA lock
Peli Aegis PX18 27 × 16 × 46 cm 1.22 kg personal item backpack with laptop protection
Peli Aegis HY22 36.6 × 26.9 × 55.9 cm 3.32 kg 47 L rolling duffel
Peli ATX HC25 66 × 45.7 × 26.9 cm 8.39 kg mid-size check-in suitcase, 70 L
Peli Air 1595 TRVL 72.4 × 45.4 × 27.3 cm see product page light check-in suitcase
Peli ATX HC30 76.2 × 50.8 × 30.7 cm 9.93 kg long trips and heavy packing, 90 L
Peli Aegis HY32 40.6 × 38.1 × 76.2 cm 4.76 kg 115 L check-in bag

The Peli Air 1535 and 1615, and the PX25 backpack, are also in the range; see their product pages for sizes: Peli Air 1535, Peli Air 1615, Peli Aegis PX25. Empty weight matters: a 4.7–4.8 kg hard case leaves roughly 3.2 kg of the 8 kg limit for contents, while the PX18 backpack leaves almost 6.8 kg.

Small backpack, handbag and laptop bag – what does ITA Airways treat as a personal item?

The personal item is not a second full-size bag – our guide explains whether you can have two carry-on bags. A 30 × 40 × 15 cm backpack measured empty can stop fitting once stuffed, especially with a thick front pocket or bottle holders, and a rigid laptop bag hardly compresses at all, so check its whole external outline. ITA Airways also uses an 'Under the Seat' tag for small pieces up to 30 × 40 × 15 cm, except on flights operated by A330 aircraft; this is a labelling procedure, not an extra allowance.

Keep in the personal item whatever you need in flight or cannot afford to lose if the main suitcase goes to the hold:

  • documents, wallet and phone;
  • medication and things needed without delay;
  • a laptop, tablet, camera or e-reader, if they fit the permitted dimensions;
  • headphones, chargers and cables in one small organiser;
  • one light layer of clothing, as long as the bag keeps its size.

A suitcase, a backpack, a waist pack, a camera bag and airport shopping do not form one personal item, and a shop bag from the departures area is not a reliable way to increase your allowance. For 2–3 days you can pack everything into one small backpack; for a week, use a cabin suitcase plus a small backpack.

How to measure your suitcase before a flight and choose luggage that really fits the limit

Do not rely on the manufacturer's 'cabin size' label. Measure the finished, closed suitcase standing upright: height from the lowest point of the wheels to the highest fixed element, width including side handles, depth from the most protruding point at the front to the back. Suitcases with an expansion zip and soft front pockets get thicker once packed, so measure again after packing. We describe typical mistakes in our guide to the five traps of cabin luggage dimensions and weight.

A backpack adapts more easily to the sizer, but depth after packing is the usual problem; capacity in litres is no substitute for centimetres. A rigid suitcase changes shape less once closed, which makes it predictable, but a hard shell cannot be squeezed, so every centimetre counts. Durable cases such as those from Peli make sense when protecting the contents is the priority. Pack as for the trip, close all zips, measure all three directions and weigh the bag; if any dimension is close to the maximum, measure the widest point twice.

How to pack within 8 kg – clothes, shoes and cosmetics without overloading the suitcase

Weigh the empty suitcase first: a 2.8 kg suitcase leaves around 5.2 kg for contents, a 1.2 kg backpack almost 6.8 kg. Keep a reserve of 300–500 g for the difference between your scale and the airport equipment, and for shopping. As a rough example, not an ITA Airways standard: clothes 2.0–2.7 kg, shoes 0.6–0.8 kg, cosmetics 0.4–0.5 kg, electronics 0.5–1.0 kg.

Pack outfits, not days: one pair of trousers used in three outfits weighs less than three pairs taken 'just in case'. Wear the heaviest items for the journey and plan one wash on a longer stay, which is worth more than any folding technique. Rolling and compression bags change volume, not weight, so weigh the bag after every major repack. Shoes and the toiletry bag are the easiest way to blow the limit: one versatile pair on your feet and at most one light pair in the bag, and cosmetics in smaller packs matching the length of the stay.

The weight limit is separate from the security rules on liquids. A suitcase under 8 kg can still contain a cosmetic that cannot pass security in its packaging. Do two weigh-ins, the empty suitcase and the finished bag, and if the result is close to 8 kg, check shoes, toiletry bag and chargers first.

Liquids, cosmetics, medication and food – what will make it through security?

The airline defines the bag; liquid screening is run by the airport. In 2026 certified C3 scanners allowing larger containers operate at some European airports, while others still enforce the 100 ml limit. If an airport does not clearly announce a higher limit, use containers of at most 100 ml in one transparent resealable bag of up to 1 litre. What counts is the capacity of the packaging, not the amount inside. Our guide to packing cosmetics for a plane goes into more detail.

Gels, creams, pastes, aerosols, jam, yoghurt, soft cheese and thick sauces can fall under the liquid rules, while a sandwich or dry snacks do not; customs and food-import rules at the destination still apply. See also items you cannot bring on a plane. At Rome Fiumicino, ITA Airways' main hub, modern scanners currently allow containers of up to 2 litres at most checkpoints, but different procedures remain for certain destinations, including the USA and Israel. On a route with a connection, pack for the most restrictive stage.

Liquid medication and infant food can benefit from exceptions but need separate screening, so keep them in original, labelled packaging and easy to reach; prescription medication or medical devices may require documentation. Duty-free liquids stay in the sealed bag with the receipt until no re-screening is possible. Before security:

  • check your departure airport's website for the liquid limit in force;
  • without clear information about a higher limit, use containers of up to 100 ml and a transparent bag;
  • keep medication and infant food where you can retrieve them quickly and declare them;
  • check the rules at your connecting airport;
  • keep purchases sealed with the receipt until there is no further liquids check.

Power bank, laptop and electronics – what must stay in your cabin baggage?

Power banks and loose lithium batteries must not go into checked baggage, so if your cabin suitcase is taken at the gate, remove them first. For typical personal devices ITA Airways gives a limit of up to 100 Wh each without the airline's approval, up to 15 such devices per passenger; damaged or recalled devices are not accepted. A maximum of two power banks per person is allowed: up to 100 Wh without approval, above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh with the airline's authorisation. The Wh figure must be marked and verifiable. Our guide to power banks in carry-on baggage covers the general rules.

If only mAh and volts are given, use Wh = mAh × V ÷ 1000: a 20,000 mAh, 3.7 V power bank has around 74 Wh. During the flight you must not charge devices from a power bank or charge the power bank from the aircraft, except for approved portable medical devices, and it should stay with you, not in the overhead locker. Spare batteries need protected terminals, for example original packaging or separate pouches.

Electronics are also a common reason for exceeding 8 kg: a laptop weighs 1.2–2 kg, and adapter, camera, lens, power bank and cables come on top. Split them between the suitcase and the personal item, protect camera gear against shifting with a soft organiser, and keep cables in one light pouch. Small waterproof cases keep essentials together: the Peli G5 RFID blocking wallet is 10.4 × 6.5 × 1.1 cm, the Peli 1010 and Peli 1030 suit keys, cards and a phone, and the Peli 1060 takes a phone and documents.

Gate checks, full aircraft and codeshare – when can your bag end up in the hold?

A compliant suitcase has no unconditional guarantee of staying in the cabin. The carrier can check size and weight before boarding and refuse the cabin because of dimensions, weight, safety, aircraft balance or lack of space, and extra charges may apply. On busy flights a compliant bag may be collected at the gate and placed in the hold with a receipt to collect it after landing; this does not apply to intercontinental flights. Keep documents, medication, laptop, power banks and batteries easy to reach so you can remove them in seconds. If the day goes wrong for other reasons, see what to do if you miss your flight.

On a codeshare ticket, ITA Airways refers passengers to the rules of the carrier actually operating the flight, so the AZ code alone does not mean 55 × 40 × 23 cm applies on that leg. On a multi-carrier journey the allowance depends on how the ticket is constructed, so pack for the most restrictive limit on the route. Journeys to, from or via the United States and Canada require greater consistency of baggage policy, and local cabin requirements may apply.

Situation What to check Practical decision
Flight operated by ITA Airways the limit on your ticket and ITA's current rules measure and weigh your bag against your own booking's limit
Codeshare the airline actually operating the segment check its cabin rules before packing
Multi-carrier journey the conditions of the whole ticket and each operator's limits do not assume the first segment settles everything
Route via the USA or Canada the allowance shown on the ticket and the whole itinerary apply the limit attached to the journey and local requirements

What to pack in your ITA Airways cabin bag

A ready-made way to pack for ITA Airways for a weekend, a week and a business trip

A weekend in Italy – one suitcase and a minimum of things

Two or three outfits built from the same base pieces are enough: one pair of trousers, two or three tops, underwear and a light layer. Wear the heaviest shoes, jacket and jeans for the journey, and aim for 7.3–7.5 kg before departure to leave room for souvenirs. Our packing guide for a trip to Rome adds destination ideas.

A week with cabin baggage only – laundry instead of seven outfits

A bag filled for seven days can easily weigh 9 or 10 kg. Pack for 3–4 days, plan one wash and drop the second jacket and the large cosmetic packs; see also how to pack for a trip to Milan. Weigh the suitcase again the evening before the return flight.

A business trip – laptop, documents and clothes without chaos

Put the computer, documents, power bank, phone and chargers in a laptop bag that fits the personal item limit, and the clothes in the suitcase: smart shoes, trousers or a skirt, two shirts and a blazer. Two cabin pieces are possible only when your Business ticket says so. Limits differ by carrier, as the Lufthansa carry-on guide shows.

Before closing the suitcase:

  • measure the packed bag with wheels, handles and pockets;
  • weigh the empty suitcase and the finished bag, leaving a margin below 8 kg;
  • check on your ticket and in 'My Bookings' how many pieces you may bring;
  • verify the liquid rules at departure and connecting airports;
  • check the Wh markings on power banks and keep spare batteries in the cabin;
  • move documents, medication and valuables to the personal item, and weigh the bag again before the return flight.

FAQ – ITA Airways cabin baggage in 2026/27

What is the cabin bag size and weight limit on ITA Airways?

The current hand luggage page states 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg for the main cabin piece, plus a personal item of 30 × 40 × 15 cm. Confirm the allowance on your own booking.

Does the 8 kg limit apply to the personal item as well?

The page gives 8 kg for the main cabin piece and publishes only dimensions for the personal item, which must still be small enough to fit under the seat.

Can I take a power bank on an ITA Airways flight?

Yes, up to two per person, in the cabin only. Up to 100 Wh needs no approval; above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh requires the airline's authorisation. It must not be used or charged on board.

What if my cabin bag is taken at the gate?

A compliant bag may be placed in the hold on a full flight, and you receive a receipt to collect it after landing. Remove power banks, batteries, documents, medication and valuables first.
