Watch boxes
Watch boxes are the stationary option for a dresser, a shelf or an office. Sizes run from small boxes holding a few watches to display cabinets for several dozen pieces. Smaller boxes are discreet and easy to tuck away, while larger display cases double as decoration, often with a transparent lid so you can admire the collection without opening anything. Cushions and compartments keep each watch in place.

A single-watch case is the right choice for the piece you wear every day or the one watch you take on a short trip. Each case gives individual protection against scratches and knocks, comes in materials from leather to technical plastics, and is small enough for a coat pocket or the corner of a bag.

Why a Peli case with a custom-cut insert

Choosing shell and foam colours
The Peli 1400 cases let you personalise the build. The outer shell comes in Black, Yellow, Orange or Silver, and the lower foam layer in Blue, Yellow, Red, Green or Gray, which gives 20 combinations on the 10-watch version. A high-visibility yellow shell is easy to spot at bag claim, while black with a red lining is discreet outside and striking when opened. Every variant ships finished and ready to use.
Materials and build quality
Natural leather
Natural leather gives a watch box an elegant look and long life, and it develops a patina that makes each piece unique. It is highly wear-resistant, but it costs more and needs proper care to keep its looks.
Synthetic leather
Synthetic, eco or vegan leather is cheaper and has a smaller environmental footprint. It is easy to maintain and less prone to moisture damage, though it usually does not match natural leather for durability or feel, and its appearance can deteriorate faster.
Wood, metal and glass
Wood is a classic material with a warm look, but it scratches more easily and needs care. Metal is very durable and modern, at the price of weight and a tendency to scratch if left unprotected. Glass lids let you admire the collection without opening the box, but glass is fragile and demands careful handling.
Interior lining
The lining has a direct effect on protection. Velvet, velour and microfibre are soft and gentle on crystals and cases, and a well-designed lining stabilises each watch so it cannot shift. Choose materials that are durable, easy to clean and do not absorb moisture. In a Peli case the closed-cell foam does this job and also resists moisture.
How to store watches long-term, beyond the box
- Keep watches away from direct sunlight, which fades dials and dries out leather straps.
- Avoid radiators and windowsills, where temperature swings encourage condensation inside the case.
- Control humidity. A sachet of silica gel in the box helps, and so does the sealed interior of a Peli case.
- Keep mechanical watches away from strong magnets such as speakers, laptop closures and magnetic bag clasps, which can magnetise the hairspring and ruin accuracy.
- Let automatic watches stop rather than shaking them awake. A winder is only worth it for complications such as a perpetual calendar.
- Store service papers, spare links and tools in the same case, ideally in a dedicated accessory compartment.
Travelling with a watch collection
Valuable watches travel in the cabin, never in checked baggage. Hold luggage can be delayed, opened or lost, and airline liability limits will not come close to covering a fine timepiece. A solid lock keeps the box shut in transit and, on better models, also deters theft. Pick the lock according to how often and where you will use the case, and make sure it operates smoothly. Compartments and cushions
Compartments should match the size of your watches: too tight puts pressure on the cases, too loose fails to give stability. Cushions should be soft, flexible and moisture-resistant. Colour

Budget boxes in synthetic leather or plastic still protect against dust and scratches, provided the locks are solid and the lining is adequate. Premium products add natural materials, personalised inserts and longer service life. Judge value by the quality of materials and workmanship, the functionality you will really use and the manufacturer's reputation. Frequently asked questions about watch storage
Can I store automatic watches unwound? Yes. Letting an automatic stop does no harm. A winder is only useful for watches with complications that are tedious to reset, such as perpetual calendars or moonphases.
Is a waterproof case really necessary at home? Not strictly, but a sealed case protects against the two slow killers of watches, humidity and dust. The same box then works at home, in a car boot and in an aircraft cabin.
Should watches touch each other in a box? Never. Sapphire crystals scratch steel bracelets and the other way round. Every watch needs its own compartment or foam slot.
Do I still need a safe? A safe and a protective case complement each other. Many collectors keep a foam-fitted Peli case inside the safe, so the whole collection can be grabbed and transported in seconds, fully protected.
