Nothing in aerial photography beats water: turquoise shallows fading into deep blue, a lone kayak cutting a glassy fjord, waves breaking in slow motion from fifty metres up. And nothing in aerial photography is as unforgiving — because over water, there is no walking to the crash site. 🌊
On land, most drone incidents end with a repair bill. Over the sea, every incident — a sagging battery, a gust you didn't plan for, a home point that moved — ends the same way: a splash, thirty seconds of disbelief, and a total loss that standard warranties don't cover. Salt water finishes electronics in minutes; even a rescued airframe is usually beyond saving.
That's not a reason to keep your drone off the coast — it's the reason coastal flying has rules of its own. Here are the nine that separate pilots with spectacular ocean footage from pilots with stories about where their drone used to be.

1. Accept the maths: over water, every mistake is a total loss
Start with the honest premise, because every other rule flows from it. Over land you can push a battery, chase a shot behind a ridge, or gamble on a sketchy landing, and usually the worst case is a repair. Over water the worst case is always the same, so your margins must be wider in every dimension: more battery held in reserve, more altitude, more distance from obstacles, less improvisation. Fly the ocean like a pilot who has already lost one drone to it — those are the pilots who never lose a second.
2. Respect wind that has nothing to slow it down
Over open water there are no trees, hills or buildings to break the wind — it blows harder, steadier and often from a different direction than on your sheltered launch beach. The classic trap: a tailwind carries the drone out effortlessly, the battery reads fine, and only on the turn home do you discover you're crawling into a headwind that eats three percent per hundred metres. The rules: check wind at altitude before launch, fly the upwind leg first so the wind helps you home, and treat whitecaps on the water as a visible wind meter — when they appear, margins shrink fast.
3. On a boat, your home point is lying to you
Return-to-home flies to coordinates — and if you launched from a boat, those coordinates are now open water somewhere behind you. This single misunderstanding has drowned more drones than any hardware failure: signal blips, RTH triggers, and the aircraft dutifully descends onto empty sea. Sailing or motoring while flying means updating the home point to follow the controller/boat (most apps allow it — learn where that setting lives before you're afloat), raising the RTH altitude above mast height, and planning a hand catch rather than an automated landing on a moving deck.

4. Keep altitude — low over water, your sensors hallucinate
Downward vision and infrared sensors were calibrated for solid, textured ground. Give them moving, reflective, semi-transparent water and they misjudge height, fire phantom landing protections, or drift with the waves the camera is tracking. Skimming the surface looks incredible and is precisely where drones get slapped down by a wave that was half a metre taller than its neighbours. Keep a respectful working floor — several metres minimum, more in swell — get the low-angle look with a wide lens and a slight tilt instead of actual wave-top altitude, and know how your model behaves over water before you need that knowledge.
5. Treat seagulls as air traffic with a grudge
Coastal birds — gulls especially, and any raptor — take active interest in drones, and near nesting season that interest becomes coordinated harassment. The instinctive response (descend, flee for shore) is exactly wrong: birds attack from above, and diving puts you in their strike path with water waiting below. The counterintuitive right answer: climb — birds rarely follow far upward — then reposition and land. Better still, read the sky before launch; if birds are working the water where you plan to fly, film somewhere else. You're the visitor in their airspace, legally and practically.
6. Fly above the salt, not in it
You don't need a splash for the sea to hurt your drone. Breaking waves and onshore wind fill the lowest few metres of air with invisible salt spray that coats motors, boards and lens glass — corrosive immediately, conductive when damp. Sticky gimbal movement and hazy footage after a beach week is salt, not wear. Stay above the spray zone (higher in strong onshore wind), keep beach launches back from the break, and never leave the aircraft standing in blowing sand and spray between flights — that's what the sealed case at your feet is for.

7. A summer beach is a crowd, not a launch pad
All the people-rules from land apply double at the coast: a packed August beach is an assembly of people no consumer drone may overfly, swimmers can't see or dodge an aircraft, and launching from among sunbathers is both illegal and a prop-injury waiting to happen. Launch from a quiet stretch, fly your camera along the water rather than over towels, and shoot crowded coastlines from the seaward side at altitude. 8. Master the hand launch and hand catch — before you need them
Boats, rocky coves, kayak trips and soft dune sand all lack one thing: a flat, clean takeoff surface. The professional's answer is launching and catching by hand — with technique, not improvisation: aircraft gripped from below at arm's length, props clear of everything, a helper on the sticks the first times, catches made upwind with the drone descending to you. Practise on a calm field day until it's boring. 9. Run the salt-air ritual after every session
The flight ends; the corrosion clock keeps running. The two-minute ritual that keeps coastal drones alive: wipe the airframe, motors and lens with a barely damp fresh-water cloth, then dry completely before anything gets sealed — a damp drone in a closed case is a corrosion chamber.
