Lufthansa's hold baggage rules look simple, one bag, 23 kg, and then a passenger on an Economy Light fare discovers at the desk that the bag was never included, or a Business traveller with a 33 kg case learns that 32 is a hard ceiling for the people who lift it. This is the 2026 version of our Lufthansa checked baggage guide, rewritten from the ground up: which fares include a bag, the weight and size limits by cabin, what adding or exceeding costs, what status changes, what goes in the hold and what must not, what happens when a bag is damaged, and which suitcases survive the Lufthansa baggage system. 🧳

The 10 things to know
1. Light means no bag: read the fare before you pack 🎫
Lufthansa sells European Economy in three fares, and the checked bag is the thing that separates them. Economy Light includes no checked bag at all; Classic includes one; Flex includes one plus changes and refunds. Long-haul Economy fares follow a similar ladder, with Light again excluding the hold bag on most routes. This is the rule that catches the most people, because Lufthansa's cabin allowance is identical on all three fares and travellers assume the hold bag is too. It is not. If you need the hold, Classic is the fare; adding a bag to Light later is possible but costs more than the fare difference on most routes.
2. The weights: 23 kg in Economy, 32 kg in Business and First ⚖️
Where a bag is included, the allowance by cabin is:
- Economy Classic and Flex: one bag of up to 23 kg.
- Premium Economy: two bags of up to 23 kg each.
- Business: two bags of up to 32 kg each.
- First: three bags of up to 32 kg each.
The allowance is per piece, not pooled: two 23 kg bags in Premium Economy is not one 46 kg bag. And 32 kg is the absolute maximum for any single piece in any cabin, because it is the ergonomic limit for baggage handlers across the industry; a heavier bag is refused or must be repacked, regardless of what you paid for.
3. The size: 158 cm, length plus width plus height 📏
A standard checked bag may measure up to 158 cm in the sum of its three dimensions, including wheels, handles and pockets. A typical large suitcase of 75 x 50 x 30 cm adds up to 155 cm and passes; the very largest trolley cases and most equipment cases above the 1615 class are over and count as oversize. Bags between 158 and 292 cm are accepted as special baggage for a fee and by prior arrangement; above that they travel as cargo. For a hard case this arithmetic is worth doing before you buy, because a case that is 3 cm over on one axis is oversize on every flight for the rest of its life.

4. What it costs to add, exceed or oversize 💶
Lufthansa prices checked baggage by route and by when you buy it, and publishes the tables on its site; they change often enough that we do not print numbers here. The structure does not change. A first bag added to a Light fare at booking is the cheapest way to get one; the same bag added at check-in costs more, and at the airport desk more again. A bag over its weight allowance but under 32 kg is charged a heavy-bag fee rather than refused. A bag over 158 cm is charged as oversize. A second or third bag beyond the allowance is charged per piece. The single most expensive way to fly with a suitcase is to arrive at the desk on a Light fare with a 25 kg bag, which triggers both the airport rate and the heavy-bag fee. 5. What Miles & More status adds ⭐
Frequent Traveller status does not add a checked bag. Senator and HON Circle members receive one additional piece of checked baggage at the weight of their cabin's allowance, on Lufthansa and on partner carriers within the Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance, including on Light fares where the base allowance is zero. Star Alliance Gold from another programme gives the same extra piece. For a photographer or a musician who travels often, this extra bag is the quietly valuable status benefit, and it is worth confirming on the booking before relying on it.
6. Sports equipment and instruments 🎿
Skis, snowboards, golf bags, bicycles, surfboards, diving gear and similar items travel as sports baggage, either within the standard allowance where they fit the weight and size rules or as a paid special item where they do not, and most need to be registered with Lufthansa in advance. Bicycles must be boxed or bagged with pedals removed and bars turned; diving cylinders must be empty with the valve open. Musical instruments that fit the checked size rules travel as normal baggage, ideally in a flight case with foam; larger ones need advance arrangement or a seat in the cabin. 7. What belongs in the hold and what must not 🔋
The hold is the right place for liquids over 100 ml, knives and tools, toiletry aerosols within the limits, sports gear, and clothes. It is the wrong place, and in some cases the illegal place, for spare lithium batteries and power banks, which must travel in the cabin; for e-cigarettes, lighters and matches; for gas canisters, fuel and fireworks; and for anything you cannot replace, because airline liability for lost or damaged checked bags is capped under the Montreal Convention at a figure that is currently a little over 1,500 special drawing rights and excludes valuables and fragile items in most airlines' terms. A device with a lithium battery installed, a laptop for example, is permitted in the hold if fully switched off, but Lufthansa and most carriers now prefer it in the cabin, and so do we.

8. What the Lufthansa baggage system does to a suitcase 🛄
Frankfurt and Munich run two of the largest automated baggage systems in Europe: kilometres of belts, tipping points, high-speed sorters and containers stacked in the hold. It is efficient and it is not gentle, and a soft bag or a thin ABS shell shows it after a season of transfers. The shell matters, the closure matters more, and the wheels matter most, because they are the part that catches on every edge. The consequences for choosing a case are in what really happens to your suitcase after check-in. For the hold we recommend three kinds of Peli: the ATX HC25 and HC30 travel suitcases with lined interiors and TSA latches for clothes; the Air 1615 in its plain or Travel version, an IP67 latched case that takes a lid organiser and a laptop pocket; and, for equipment, the deeper Air 1637, 1626 and 1606 with foam or dividers, all of which are under the 158 cm rule.
9. Damaged, delayed or lost: how to claim 📄
Report damage at the airport before you leave the baggage hall, at Lufthansa's baggage service desk, and get a Property Irregularity Report; a claim raised afterwards is much harder. For delayed bags, the same report starts the tracing and entitles you to reasonable interim expenses; for lost bags, the compensation ceiling is the Montreal Convention limit described above, which is why valuables and irreplaceable items belong in the cabin. Photograph your packed and closed case before every flight; it is the single most useful piece of evidence in a claim. 10. Lufthansa Group: same rules, different fare names ✈️
Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines apply the same checked baggage weights and the same 158 cm rule, with fare families named slightly differently and the same principle that the cheapest fare excludes the hold bag. Eurowings uses a similar structure with its own fee table. On a mixed itinerary the most restrictive segment governs, so check each carrier's allowance on a Lufthansa booking that includes a Eurowings or partner flight; the checked bag that is included on the long-haul leg may be a paid add-on on a connecting Eurowings flight booked separately.

How to pack a checked bag for Lufthansa
- Confirm the bag is in the fare. Light means none; add it at booking if you need it.
- Weigh it packed, at home, against 23 or 32 kg. A luggage scale costs less than one heavy-bag fee.
- Add the three dimensions. Under 158 cm including wheels, or it is oversize on every flight.
- Batteries and power banks out, into the cabin, terminals covered. This is the one that offloads bags.
- Liquids double-bagged in the centre, heavy items low, nothing hard against the shell.
- Latches over zips and a TSA-approved lock, so security can open and relock without cutting.
- Valuables, medication and documents in the cabin, because the liability cap will not replace them.
- Photograph the packed and the closed case before it leaves your hands.
- Report any damage before leaving the baggage hall. A report the next day is a lost claim.
