You have seen the shot a hundred times online: the fjord, the ridge, the sea stack. Then you finally stand there and share the composition with forty phones, three tour flags and a queue for the "photo spot". The more epic the location, the harder it is to photograph the place instead of the crowd photographing the place.
An empty frame is almost never luck. It is engineered with timing, season, effort and a little psychology. The method: five tactics that empty any frame
1. Own the hours nobody wants. Tourism runs on a schedule: breakfast until 9, viewpoints 10 to 18, dinner after. The best light, the hour around sunrise and the blue hour before it, sits outside that window. Waking up three hours earlier removes roughly 95% of people and upgrades your light at the same time.
2. Shift the season, not just the hour. The trail that carries thousands in August carries dozens in late September and almost nobody in May.
3. Apply the effort filter. Almost any viewpoint more than a 45-minute walk from the car park loses the overwhelming majority of visitors. Make it 90 minutes with some elevation and you are statistically alone.
4. Recruit the weather. Fog, storm-edge light and fresh rain on rock make photographs and cancel tour buses.
5. When all else fails, erase and outframe. A 6 to 10 stop ND filter and a 2 to 4 minute exposure turn moving people into invisible ghosts.
The North Atlantic: big drama, small car parks
1. Senja, Norway: the quiet Lofoten
Why here: Lofoten's classic spots have queues at sunrise in peak months. One fjord system north, Senja offers the same granite-meets-ocean drama with a fraction of the visitors. Its signature peak, Segla, rises like an axe blade straight from the sea.
Where exactly: The easy Segla view is from Hesten's lower slopes above Fjordgård, about an hour up; the full Hesten summit gives the vertigo composition straight across at Segla's face. On the road, Tungeneset's rock slabs and walkway frame the jagged Okshornan peaks, best in evening side light or under storm skies.
When and logistics: June and July bring the midnight sun, so shoot at 1 a.m. in golden light. September adds autumn colour and first snow, and winter is aurora season. Fly to Tromsø, drive about 2.5 hours and base in Fjordgård, Hamn or Skaland.
2. Drangarnir, Faroe Islands: the arch at the end of the path
Why here: The sea arch of Drangarnir stands before the pyramid islet of Tindhólmur. It is one of the North Atlantic's most jaw-dropping compositions and one of its least crowded, because access crosses private land and is only possible on a guided hike or by boat.
Where exactly: The classic frame is from the final headland at the end of the guided route from Sørvágur: arch in the foreground, Tindhólmur's fins behind, under a moody sky with a long exposure smoothing the strait.
When and logistics: Hikes run from May to September. Book the guided tour ahead and build in a buffer day. Faroese weather means four seasons per hour, so waterproof everything. Fly to Vágar directly from Copenhagen; the trailhead is minutes from the airport.
3. Stokksnes and Vestrahorn, Iceland: the paid gate that buys you silence
Why here: The Stokksnes peninsula under the spiked wall of Vestrahorn stays calm, partly because it lies far south-east and partly because of the small access fee at the Viking Café gate. What is left is black dunes, tidal mirror-flats and a 454-metre bat-wing mountain, frequently all yours at dawn.
Where exactly: Three frames define the place: the tufted black dunes with Vestrahorn behind, the wet-sand reflections at mid-to-low tide (a falling tide leaves the glassiest film), and the turf-roofed Viking film-set village included in the same ticket.
When and logistics: Year-round; aurora from September to March, and June brings 3 a.m. golden light with zero people. It is about 15 minutes from Höfn.

Where exactly: Ra Gusela's wedge takes alpenglow beautifully. Walk 10 to 15 minutes up the meadow slopes for higher viewpoints with the road's hairpins as leading lines.
When and logistics: The road is open roughly from late May to October. Late September is the sweet spot, with larch gold, fresh summit snow and thin crowds.
5. Aiguilles de Bavella, Corsica, France: the Dolomites nobody visits
Why here: A wall of red granite spires above pine forest that photographs like a southern Dolomites, yet even in high summer hosts a handful of hikers. Corsica's beach tourism simply does not climb.
Where exactly: The Col de Bavella roadside viewpoints deliver the postcard, best in warm evening light. For the signature frame, hike an hour through pines toward the Trou de la Bombe (Tafonu di u Cumpuleddu), a huge natural eye-hole in the rock wall that frames the needles beyond.
When and logistics: May to June and September to October are ideal; summer is hot and hazy by midday.
6. Bardenas Reales, Spain: badlands on a weekday
Why here: A semi-desert of eroded clay towers, ochre gullies and moon ridges in Navarre, used by film crews as the American Southwest. Outside summer weekends the dirt-road loop is close to deserted.
Where exactly: Castildetierra, the lone hoodoo spire, works at both ends of the day. The Blanca Baja loop passes wave-like erosion banks and rim viewpoints over striped hills. Much of the area overlaps a military range and protected zones, so assume no-fly for drones unless verified.
When and logistics: Go from September to June, on weekdays. The loop is unpaved but passable in a normal car when dry; after rain the clay becomes soap. Check the park's opening hours, which can make sunset the easier empty-light play.
7. Praia da Ursa, Portugal: the descent that filters everyone
Why here: Twenty minutes from Sintra hides one of Europe's most dramatic beaches, with sea stacks like broken cathedral spires. A steep, loose, unofficial cliff path keeps it empty: the effort filter in its purest form.
Where exactly: The clifftop overlook near Cabo da Roca already gives a complete composition. Down on the beach, put the Ursa stack against sunset with a long exposure, or use low-tide rock platforms as reflective foreground.
When and logistics: Sunset alignment is best from autumn through spring. Park near Cabo da Roca and walk the coastal path.
The south-east: gorges, Alps without queues, lakes in the sky
8. Vikos Gorge, Greece: the abyss with no railing and no queue
Why here: In Zagori, the Vikos Gorge drops away in limestone walls up to a kilometre deep, and its rim viewpoints receive only a trickle of visitors even in August.
Where exactly: Beloi viewpoint, a 40 to 60 minute walk from Vradeto, juts over the void for the definitive down-gorge frame; go at dawn. Oxya viewpoint near Monodendri is a drive-up alternative.
When and logistics: April to June and September to October are perfect, with autumn mist in the gorge at dawn.
9. Theth and the Albanian Alps: the last quiet Alps in Europe
Why here: The Accursed Mountains deliver full alpine drama, with jagged 2,500 m walls, waterfalls and stone kullas, and even the famous spots host dozens, not thousands.
Where exactly: In Theth, look for the stone church against the mountain wall at dawn, Grunas waterfall an hour's walk up-valley, and the Blue Eye of Theth (Syri i Kaltër), a turquoise spring pool reached by a half-day walk.
When and logistics: High routes are open from June to September, and late September empties further.
10. The Seven Rila Lakes, Bulgaria: sleep high, shoot alone
Why here: Seven glacial lakes step down a granite cirque above 2,100 m. At midday the chairlift delivers crowds, but if you stay the night at the mountain hut you own the cirque from the last lift down to the first lift up, with sunset, night sky and sunrise in solitude.
Where exactly: The classic frame is from the ridge above Lake Babreka ("the Kidney"), about 1.5 to 2 hours' walk above the lift top.
When and logistics: Go from late June to September, on weekdays. The lift starts at Pionerska near Sapareva Banya. At 2,300 m, storms build fast on summer afternoons: shoot early, then descend or shelter by noon.
