Which Peli Case for a Sony A7 IV or Canon R5 with 3 Lenses?

You have invested somewhere between €4,000 and €10,000 in a mirrorless body and a set of lenses. The question is no longer whether to protect it — it is which case actually fits your kit, still counts as carry-on, and does not slow you down at the gate. Below is the honest answer for the most common professional setup: one full-frame body (Sony A7 IV, Canon R5 or similar) plus three lenses.

First, measure your kit — not the case

A typical three-lens kit looks like this:

  • Body with a standard zoom attached (e.g. 24–70mm f/2.8): roughly 20 × 14 × 16 cm
  • Telephoto zoom (70–200mm f/2.8): about 20 cm long, 9 cm diameter
  • Wide zoom or prime (16–35mm or 35mm f/1.4): about 10–12 cm long
  • Plus the parts everyone forgets: 4–6 batteries, charger, filters, memory cards, cleaning kit, maybe a flash

Laid out flat with protective padding between items, this kit needs an interior of roughly 45 × 25 × 15 cm. That number decides everything below.

Option 1: Peli 1510 Protector — the industry default

The Peli 1510 Protector has been the standard photographer's carry-on for over two decades, and for good reason.

  • Interior: 50.1 × 27.9 × 19.3 cm — your three-lens kit fits with room for accessories
  • Carry-on sized for most full-service airlines, with wheels and an extension handle
  • IP67 rated: watertight, dustproof, with an automatic pressure equalization valve for flights
  • Weight: around 5.4 kg empty — this is its one real drawback

Choose the 1510 if you value maximum crush resistance over weight, or if the case will regularly travel in vehicles, boats and rough field conditions rather than just airports.

Option 2: Peli Air 1535 — same size class, 27% lighter

The Peli Air 1535 is the case we recommend most often to travelling photographers, and it is what most working pros buy today.

  • Interior: 51.8 × 28.4 × 18.3 cm — marginally longer and wider than the 1510
  • Weight: approximately 3.95 kg empty — nearly 1.5 kg lighter than the 1510
  • Same IP67 protection, pressure valve, wheels and carry-on geometry

With airline weight limits of 8–10 kg for cabin baggage, that 1.5 kg saving is not a detail — it is the difference between bringing the third lens and leaving it at home. For a Sony A7 IV or Canon R5 kit that flies more than twice a year, the 1535 Air is our recommendation.

Option 3: Peli Air 1615 — when three lenses become six

If your kit includes a second body, lighting, a gimbal or long telephotos, no carry-on will hold it. The Peli Air 1615 is the checked-baggage answer.

  • Interior: 75.2 × 39.4 × 23.8 cm — roughly double the volume of the carry-on models
  • Light enough (about 6.2 kg empty) to stay under airline weight limits even fully loaded
  • Built to survive exactly what checked baggage handling does to luggage

A common professional setup: bodies and lenses in a 1535 Air in the cabin, lighting and support gear in a 1615 Air in the hold.

Foam or dividers?

Every case above is available with different interiors, and this choice matters as much as the case itself:

  • Pick N Pluck foam — cut once, perfect fit, maximum shock absorption. Best if your kit never changes. Weakness: reconfiguring means buying new foam.
  • Padded dividers — flexible compartments you can rearrange per job. Slightly less impact isolation, far more day-to-day practicality. This is what most photographers end up preferring.
  • TrekPak-style dividers — the rigid middle ground: cleaner organization than soft dividers, more adaptable than foam.

Do not waste the lid

The inside of the lid is prime storage space that ships empty. A mesh lid organizer keeps batteries, cards, filters and cables visible and secured, and a laptop lid organizer turns the same case into a complete mobile workstation — camera below, 14–16″ laptop in the lid.

The short version

  • One body + 3 lenses, flying regularly: Peli Air 1535 with dividers
  • One body + 3 lenses, hard field use (vehicles, boats, dust): Peli 1510 Protector
  • Two bodies, lighting, video rig: Peli Air 1615 as checked baggage, ideally paired with a carry-on case for the glass

Every case comes with Peli's lifetime guarantee — you will replace the camera long before you replace the case.
