12 Tips for Photographing the Northern Lights in 2026/27 (This Aurora Season Is Still Booming)

There's a moment every aurora photographer remembers: the green arc you've been watching for an hour suddenly ignites, curtains ripple across the whole sky, and your camera — if you've prepared it right — quietly captures something you'll print and hang on a wall. 🌌

Here's the good news for anyone who hasn't ticked this off yet: we're in the sweet spot. The Sun passed the maximum of Solar Cycle 25 not long ago, and history shows the seasons immediately after solar maximum often deliver some of the strongest and most frequent aurora displays of the entire cycle — including the rare nights when the lights spill far south of the Arctic. The 2026/27 season, running roughly from September to March, is shaping up beautifully.

The bad news? Aurora photography is a fight on three fronts at once: against darkness, against cold, and against your own excitement. These 12 tips cover all three — planning, camera craft, and the unglamorous art of keeping equipment (and fingers) alive at -20°C.

Planning: be in the right place, awake 🗺️

1. Understand why this season matters

Auroras are born from solar activity — flares and coronal mass ejections hurling charged particles at Earth's magnetic field. Activity rises and falls in an ~11-year cycle, and we've just come off the peak. The declining phase is famous among aurora chasers for coronal holes: long-lived features that send fast solar wind streams our way on a repeating ~27-day rhythm, producing reliable, forecastable displays. Translation: this winter and next, your odds are about as good as they get for years to come.

2. Go north of the oval — or under it

The aurora forms a ring (the "auroral oval") around the magnetic pole. Your goal is to stand under it. The classic bases: Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands in Norway, Abisko in Sweden (famous for a local microclimate that clears the sky when everywhere else is overcast), Finnish Lapland around Levi and Saariselkä, and all of Iceland. 3. Chase darkness and data, not luck

Three numbers rule your night: the Kp index (geomagnetic activity forecast — Kp 3–4 is already promising in the far north), cloud cover (the real enemy; a Kp 7 storm above solid clouds is worth nothing), and the moon phase (a full moon washes out faint aurora but nicely lights foregrounds — a trade-off, not a dealbreaker). Free apps and space-weather sites give 30–60 minutes of warning before a substorm hits. Plan around the new moon, stay out between 21:00 and 02:00 local time, and be ready to drive to a hole in the clouds.

4. Bring the fastest, widest lens you own

The aurora is bigger than you think — it regularly fills half the sky. A wide-angle lens (14–24 mm full-frame equivalent) with a bright aperture (f/2.8 or faster) is the single most impactful piece of kit. Every stop of aperture you gain halves your exposure time, which matters enormously once the lights start moving fast. 5. Start at ISO 3200, f/2.8, 4 seconds — then adapt

Forget any "one correct exposure" — aurora brightness changes by orders of magnitude within minutes. A reliable starting point on a modern camera: manual mode, ISO 3200, aperture wide open, 4 seconds. Faint, static glow? Stretch to 8–15 seconds. Bright, dancing curtains? Drop to 1–2 seconds and even ISO 1600 — long exposures during fast activity turn crisp rays into green mush. Shoot RAW, always; white balance around 3500–4000 K keeps the greens honest instead of neon.

6. Nail focus before the show starts

More aurora nights are ruined by soft stars than by any camera limitation. Autofocus is useless in the dark, and the infinity mark on your lens lies. While it's still twilight — or using the brightest star — switch to manual focus, magnify live view to maximum, and turn the ring until stars are pinpoints. Then tape the focus ring in place and check it every hour; gloved hands nudge rings more often than you'd believe.

7. Build a foreground, not just a sky

A green sky alone is a screensaver. A green sky over a frozen fjord, a red cabin, a lone silhouetted photographer — that's a photograph. Scout compositions in daylight, look for water for reflections, and think in layers. Surviving the cold: where most nights are won or lost 🥶

8. Expect your batteries to surrender — and outsmart them

Lithium batteries can lose half their capacity or more in deep cold; a battery showing 60% can die mid-sequence at -20°C. The fix is rotation: carry 3–4 spares in an inside pocket, warmed by your body, and swap them as they chill. A "dead" cold battery usually revives after twenty minutes against your chest. 9. Beat condensation — the aurora chaser's tax

The most dangerous moment of the night is the last one: walking your deeply frozen camera into a heated cabin. Warm indoor air hits -20°C glass and metal, and water condenses on — and inside — everything. Repeat that nightly for a week and you're growing problems that outlast the trip. The clean solution: before going inside, seal the gear in a closed hard case and leave it shut for a couple of hours while it warms up. Condensation forms on the case, not the camera. 10. Respect the tripod, the wind and your own hands

A sturdy tripod is non-negotiable — and in wind, hang your case or a snow-filled bag from the centre hook for ballast. Skip the centre column, push the legs into snow until they bite, and use a 2-second timer or remote so your finger never shakes the frame. Hands: thin liner gloves under heavy mittens, so you can work controls for seconds and retreat to warmth. And never, ever touch bare metal at -20°C — the tripod will win.

11. Protect the kit in transit — the journey is rougher than the night

Aurora trips are logistics-heavy: flights, rental cars on ice, snowmobile sleds, husky trails. Soft bags survive the shoot but get crushed in between. 12. Put the camera down for one display

Set up an interval sequence, step back from the tripod, and just watch. The aurora moves in ways no photo conveys — and the memory of standing under a corona, hearing the snow creak, is the thing that will pull you back north.
