Here's an uncomfortable truth: the most expensive damage your camera gear will ever suffer probably won't come from a drop, a theft or an airline baggage handler. It will come from water vapour — invisible, silent and patient. 💧

Lens fungus doesn't announce itself. It grows in the dark, inside a padded bag in a wardrobe, over weeks and months. By the time you notice a faint spiderweb pattern when holding your lens up to the light, the damage is often permanent. And here's the kicker: fungus damage is almost never covered by warranty, because manufacturers classify it as improper storage, not a defect.

2. Internal haze — the slow contrast killer

Not every humidity problem looks like a spiderweb. More common, and harder to spot, is haze: a milky film that forms when moisture combines with microscopic oil vapour from the lens's own lubricants and settles on internal elements. You won't see it in normal photos at first — you'll just notice your images looking slightly flat, with less micro-contrast and a strange glow around highlights when shooting against the light.

Photographers often blame their technique or their sensor for months before someone shines a flashlight through the lens and finds the culprit. Haze, like fungus, usually means a professional teardown to remove.

3. Corroded contacts and dying electronics

Modern lenses are computers wrapped in glass. Autofocus motors, image stabilisation gyros, aperture actuators, dozens of gold-plated contacts — all of it hates moisture. Persistent high humidity causes slow oxidation of electrical contacts, which shows up as intermittent autofocus errors, "communication error" messages and aperture blades that respond a half-beat late. These faults are maddening because they're intermittent: the camera works at the service centre and fails on the job.

4. Sticky mechanics — helicoids, blades and rings

Focus helicoids and zoom mechanisms rely on precisely applied grease. In damp conditions, moisture migrates into these mechanisms and changes how lubricants behave — grease can separate, creep onto aperture blades or simply stiffen. 6. Condensation — the temperature-swing ambush

Take a cold camera from a winter street into a heated flat, and within seconds every surface — including internal elements and the sensor — can drop below the dew point and fog up with liquid water. The same happens leaving an air-conditioned hotel into tropical heat. One event won't kill a lens, but repeated condensation cycles push moisture deep inside, where it lingers for days.

The fix costs nothing: before the transition, seal your gear in a closed case or airtight bag and let it reach room temperature before opening — usually 1–2 hours. Condensation then forms harmlessly on the outside of the case instead of on your glass. 7. "Wardrobe storage" and other domestic incubators

Wardrobes against external walls, basements, attics, boxes under the bed — these are the most common storage spots and among the worst. Air barely moves, temperature drops at night (raising relative humidity), and in much of Northern and Central Europe indoor humidity sits at 60–75% for a good part of autumn and winter. That's fungus territory, all season long.

You don't need a laboratory. You need to know your numbers: a small digital hygrometer costs a few euros and tells you instantly whether your storage spot is safe. Anything consistently above 60% RH is a problem; the sweet spot for optics is roughly 40–50% RH. 8. It doesn't stop at lenses — sensors, EVFs and mirror boxes

Fungus and haze happily colonise camera bodies too: sensor stacks, viewfinder prisms, EVF optics, mirror boxes.
