Ask any camera repair technician when big telephoto lenses actually die, and you'll hear the same answer: almost never during shooting. A 500 mm f/4 that survives years of dawn hides, muddy riverbanks and rain squalls gets killed by something far more mundane — a car boot, an airport conveyor belt, a pothole on a safari track. 🦅
It makes cruel financial sense. For most wildlife photographers, the big lens is the single most expensive object they own after their car — often €5,000–15,000 of precisely aligned glass, magnesium and micro-motors. And unlike a camera body, a big telephoto is mechanically fragile in a very specific way: it's long, heavy and hollow, which means every knock becomes a lever acting on the mount, and every vibration travels through metre-long optical assemblies.
Here are the ten transport mistakes that account for most of the carnage — and the habits and hardware that prevent every one of them.

At home and in the car 🚗
1. Travelling with the lens mounted on the body
It feels efficient: lens on camera, ready to shoot. But in transit, that combination is a physics problem. A 3 kg lens attached to a 700 g body turns the lens mount into a fulcrum — every bump multiplies force right at the bayonet, the weakest point in the whole chain. Repair shops see the result constantly: bent mounts, cracked body castings, misaligned flanges that quietly ruin autofocus accuracy long before anything visibly breaks. The rule is simple: body and lens travel separated, each capped, each in its own compartment. Mount at the destination, not before.
2. Trusting the manufacturer's soft trunk for real transport
The padded trunk or pouch your lens came with is storage furniture, not transport protection. It shields against scratches and dust in a wardrobe; it does very little against a drop, a suitcase landing on top, or the corner of a tailgate. If your lens rides in vehicles, planes or boats, it needs a rigid shell with energy-absorbing foam — the soft trunk can ride inside it if you like, but it can't be the only line of defence.
3. Letting the lens ride loose in the boot
Hours of low-frequency vibration on rough roads is a slow, invisible attack on a telephoto: it works on screws, on element-group adhesives, on the delicate suspension of image-stabilisation units. Add one emergency braking event and your unsecured lens becomes a projectile with thousands of euros of glass at the front. The fix: a hard case with fitted foam, strapped or wedged so it cannot slide, ideally flat on the boot floor where vibration is lowest — never on top of soft luggage that lets it bounce.

Baggage handling is a statistical machine: your bag will be dropped, thrown, compressed under a hundred kilograms of other people's luggage and slid down metal chutes — not out of malice, just throughput. Padded fabric bags are designed for none of this. 5. Assuming the big lens will always fit in the cabin
Plan A is always carry-on — a 500 mm or 600 mm in a case that meets cabin dimensions. But wildlife destinations have a habit of ending with a small regional aircraft or a bush plane, where overhead bins shrink and gate-checking gets forced on you with zero notice. That's the moment soft-bag owners turn pale. The professional move: travel so that a forced gate-check is an inconvenience, not a catastrophe — meaning the lens is already in a sealed hard case that can survive the hold, with nothing loose inside. 6. Ignoring how airlines weigh and measure
A big telephoto kit flirts with every airline limit at once: carry-on weight, checked dimensions, sometimes both. Surprise fees at the gate are annoying; being forced to repack a €10,000 lens on the check-in floor is worse. Know the rules of every carrier on your itinerary — including the small regional ones — before you pack. 7. Foam that doesn't actually fit the lens
A hard case with wrong foam is a hard case half-wasted. Universal egg-crate padding lets a heavy lens migrate and hammer against the walls with every bump — you've built a very strong box for your lens to bounce around in. The lens should sit in a cut-out matching its silhouette: hood reversed or removed, tripod foot on or off (decide once, cut once), with 3–5 cm of intact foam on every side and nothing — no chargers, no teleconverters — loose in the same cavity. 8. Underestimating dust, spray and river crossings
Safari dust is legendary for a reason: hours on laterite tracks with the windows down will push fine red powder into every zip, every velcro flap, every lens pouch — and a telephoto's focus and zoom mechanisms ingest it happily. 10. Having no plan for the last hundred metres
The final transport mistake happens between vehicle and hide: lens over one shoulder, tripod over the other, coffee in hand, one tree root from disaster. Decide the last-100-metres plan before the trip: lens stays cased until you're set up, case doubles as a dry, stable platform to kneel or sit on in mud, and a beanbag rides on top for window shooting straight from the vehicle.
