The Peli 2610Z0 HeadsUp Lite puts light exactly where you are looking and leaves both hands free to do the work. A single dual mode button switches between all 3 LEDs at full brightness and one LED that stretches a set of batteries across a working week. Two straps come in the box — an adjustable cloth headband and a rubber strap that grips a hard hat or helmet — together with 3 AAA alkaline batteries, so the lamp is ready for its first shift straight out of the packaging. Certified to ATEX Zone 0 (Category 1), it is cleared for the most demanding explosive atmospheres there are.

Certified for Zone 0, the strictest classification of all

ATEX Zone 0 (Category 1) is the highest level of protection defined for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. It covers areas where a flammable gas or vapour may be present continuously, or for long periods during normal operation — the inside of a tank, the space around a filling point, a sampling station on a refinery unit. In those areas an uncertified torch is not merely discouraged, it is not permitted at all, which is exactly why a certified head-mounted light earns its place in a toolbag. Two modes, one button, no menus

Press once for High: all 3 LEDs light up for 30 lumens, a beam reaching 28 metres and a peak intensity of 194 candela — enough to pick out a valve rack across a plant room or read a gauge from the far side of a walkway. Press again for Low: a single LED at 14 lumens, 19 metres and 91 candela, which is the right amount of light for close work at arm's length, a terminal box, a manifold or a sheet of paperwork, without washing out your night vision or dazzling the colleague opposite you. High runs for around 19 hours; Low keeps going for up to 47 hours. There is nothing to scroll through and nothing to learn: gloved hands find the button and that is the whole interface.

Light enough to forget you are wearing it

At 91 grams with batteries fitted — 54 grams without — the 2610Z0 sits lightly enough to wear for a full shift without the neck ache that heavier lamps leave behind. The housing is just 3.8 cm long, so it keeps a low profile and does not catch on hatches, scaffolding or the rim of a hood. The adjustable cloth strap is the one to reach for on a bare head or under a fire hood, while the rubber strap grips tightly to a hard hat or helmet and stays put when you look down. Swapping between the two takes seconds, so the same lamp follows you from a helmeted job to a desk-height inspection.

Built for the places it is sent into

The body is moulded from ABS, a material that shrugs off knocks, dropped spanners and the general abuse of being clipped to a helmet that gets set down hard. The lens is polycarbonate, and an ethylene propylene O-ring keeps the seal, giving the lamp an IPX4 rating against splashing water from any direction — rain on an outdoor gantry, a wash-down bay, condensation dripping off a pipe run. The LEDs themselves are solid state and never need replacing, so there is no bulb to carry as a spare and nothing to fail at the worst moment.

Batteries you can find anywhere

The 2610Z0 runs on 3 AAA alkaline cells at 4.5 volts, and a set is included. That matters more than it sounds: AAA cells sit in every site store and corner shop, so a lamp that runs flat at the end of a long job is back in service in under a minute, with no proprietary pack to charge and no dock to remember.
