The Peli Air 1485 Replacement Foam Set gives you a fresh interior when your original foam has been cut to a layout that no longer suits your equipment, compressed under sustained load, or worn past the point of effective cushioning. The foam layers arrive pre-scored in a fine cube grid. To shape a cavity for any piece of equipment, place the item on the foam surface, trace its outline with a strip of tape or a chalk line, and pull the cubes free by hand. No knives, cutters, or specialist tools are required. Because material is removed one small cube at a time, corrections are straightforward: a cavity that turns out slightly too tight can be widened in a second pass without risk of overshooting, and a recess that is too shallow can be deepened by pulling an additional layer from below. The fine cube pitch also allows for non-rectangular shapes — circular lens barrels, irregular battery packs, and oddly proportioned adapters can all be accommodated without resorting to rough knife cuts.

Effective foam interiors rarely have uniform cavity depth. Camera bodies, prime lenses, zoom lenses, speedlights, and accessories each occupy different heights, and stacking equipment on top of irregular foam surfaces defeats the purpose of a rigid case. The result is a flat, uncluttered lid closure with every piece sitting at the same level, none of them protruding above the foam surface to create pressure points when the case is latched shut. As a general rule, leave at least one inch of solid foam between each item and the surrounding case wall to provide effective shock absorption on lateral impacts, not just vertical drops. Items packed closer to the walls than this are at risk of contact with the inner shell during hard knocks, even when the foam has been correctly cut.
