Ten kilograms sounds like plenty until you stand at the gate, put your suitcase on the scale and watch the display stop at 10.4. Then it becomes the most expensive 400 grams of your trip. The 10 kg cabin bag is the backbone of European short-haul travel: it is what Ryanair and Wizz Air sell you with Priority, what KLM and Air France stretch to 12 kg, and what Lufthansa trims to 8 kg. Get it right and you walk past the check-in queue. Get it wrong and you pay a gate fee that often costs more than the flight.

Most packing guides skip the two numbers that decide the outcome: how much your suitcase weighs empty and how many centimetres it really measures, wheels and handles included. 1. Know who actually gives you 10 kg in the cabin

There is no single European cabin baggage rule. Each airline sets its own dimensions, weight limit and, increasingly, a different allowance for each fare. The "10 kg carry-on" most people have in mind is a low-cost product: the large bag you buy with Priority on Ryanair or Wizz Air. Full-service airlines work differently, and some are stricter than the budget carriers. Treat the table as a starting point and check your booking, because the fare decides the allowance, not the logo on the tail.

The 10 kg figure is common, but the dimensions around it are not: Ryanair allows only 20 cm of depth, Wizz Air 23 cm, KLM only 35 cm of width. And the "full-service" label no longer guarantees anything: Lufthansa's allowance is 8 kg, and its cheapest fare includes no wheeled bag at all. 2. The personal item is the only bag that is almost always free

Every airline above includes one small personal item that goes under the seat in front of you. Its size varies more than you would expect:

• 40 × 30 × 15 cm: Lufthansa, KLM, Air France and British Airways.
• 40 × 30 × 20 cm: Ryanair and Wizz Air. Wizz allows up to 10 kg in this small bag, while Ryanair states no weight limit as long as it fits.
• 45 × 36 × 20 cm: easyJet, one of the most generous free under-seat bags in Europe.

3. What the revised EU passenger rules change, and when

In July 2026 the European Parliament gave final approval to the revised EU air passenger rights regulation. For cabin baggage the headline is more modest than many viral posts suggested:

• A free personal item of 40 × 30 × 15 cm remains every passenger's right.
• Airlines must show fares including a carry-on bag by default at the start of booking, so prices become comparable.
• Airlines may still sell cheaper fares without a cabin bag.
• The new rules take effect in 2027. Until then, today's airline-by-airline rules apply in full.

The 10 kg trolley does not become universally free. What changes is transparency: you see the price of a fare with a cabin bag up front. For a trip this winter or in spring 2027, nothing changes at the gate.

4. The 10 kg checked bag is a different product

Ryanair and Wizz Air also sell a 10 kg checked bag. On Ryanair it has the same 55 × 40 × 20 cm dimensions as the Priority cabin bag, but it goes into the hold instead of the overhead bin. It is often cheaper than Priority on busy routes, and your bag no longer has to pass the gate sizer. The trade-off is handling: conveyors, loaders and the hold are where a thin soft-sided trolley suffers and a hard shell earns its weight. Part 2: Your suitcase uses the allowance first

5. Empty weight is the first thing you pack

The 10 kg limit is not 10 kg of clothes. It is 10 kg of suitcase plus clothes. This is the most overlooked number in carry-on shopping. Here is what the popular Peli cabin cases weigh empty, from the product specifications, and what that leaves you:

6. Measure the honest centimetre

Airlines measure your bag with a metal sizer, and the dimensions include wheels and handles. Many soft trolleys labelled "55 cm" measure 57 or 58 cm with the wheels and pass only because fabric squashes. A hard case does not squash. The Peli carry-on cases are built around the classic 56 × 35 × 23 cm footprint:

• easyJet and British Airways (56 × 45 × 25 cm): all four cases fit within the published limits.
• Wizz Air and Lufthansa (55 × 40 × 23 cm): width and depth are within the limit, the HC22 sits right at 23 cm depth, and the length is about one centimetre over 55 cm on paper.
• KLM and Air France (55 × 35 × 25 cm): depth is comfortable, but the width is a few millimetres over 35 cm and the length about one centimetre over 55 cm.
• Ryanair (55 × 40 × 20 cm): a depth of around 23 cm is over the 20 cm limit, so a rigid case does not meet the rule as written.

Gate staff do not measure every bag, but when they do, the published numbers count. If you fly Ryanair regularly, carry your valuables in a small hard case as your personal item and check the clothes.

7. Why a hard case still makes sense for 10 kg

The cabin bag does not always stay in the cabin. When overhead bins fill up, airlines tag cabin bags at the gate and send them to the hold, and even paid cabin bags can end up gate-checked on busy flights. A sealed hard case copes with that. Part 3: Packing 10 kg without leaving anything important behind

8. Build a weight budget before you pack

Decide where the kilograms go before you start spending them. A typical budget for a 5-day trip in an Air 1535:

• Empty Air 1535: 3.9 kg.
• Second pair of shoes: about 0.7 to 1 kg. Trainers weigh less than leather shoes or boots.
• Toiletries in travel sizes: about 0.5 to 0.8 kg.
• Chargers, cables and adapters: about 0.3 to 0.5 kg.
• Clothes for five days: about 3 to 3.5 kg.
• Margin: at least 0.3 kg for scale differences and souvenirs.

The laptop and camera are missing because they go in your personal item, which most airlines do not weigh with the cabin bag. KLM and Air France do, because their 12 kg covers both pieces. The biggest savings are rarely in clothes: wear the heavier shoes, decant full-size toiletries and leave duplicate electronics at home.

9. Pack a hard case in two halves

A clamshell case has a deeper base and a shallow lid. In the Air 1535 the base is 13.2 cm deep and the lid 5.1 cm, which tells you how to split the load:

• Base: shoes along the wheel end, rolled clothes in rows, toiletry bag in a corner. Heavy items go near the wheels so the case rolls steadily.
• Lid: flat items such as shirts, documents, a thin jacket and chargers in a flat pouch.
• Gaps: socks and underwear in the corners and inside shoes.

10. Choose clothes that work twice

Weight limits reward a capsule wardrobe: two or three base colours that all combine. Merino wool and technical fabrics are lighter than cotton and dry overnight. Wear the heaviest items on travel day, such as boots, jeans and the jacket with full pockets. No airline weighs what you are wearing, but a coat stuffed with chargers and a power bank still has to fit under the seat or in the bin.

11. Liquids, power banks and electronics

The classic rule is 100 ml per container in one clear, resealable bag of about one litre. Some European airports now use CT scanners that allow larger containers, but the rollout is uneven, sometimes even between terminals at the same airport. Pack to the 100 ml rule unless you have checked both airports.

12. Organise the lid, not the whole case

The lid is the most underused space in a Peli carry-on. At the airport: weigh, buy early, board calm

Weigh at home, with a margin. A handheld luggage scale costs less than one gate fee. Weigh the case fully packed and aim for 9.5 kg rather than 10. Airport and home scales rarely agree to the gram.

Buy the bag online, never at the gate. An oversized or unpaid cabin bag at a Ryanair gate costs roughly €70 to €75, and Wizz Air charges around €65 for an extra bag at the gate. The same allowance booked with your ticket usually costs a fraction of that.
