Starlink Mini is the first satellite terminal you can put in a daypack and forget about until you need it. That is its genius and its problem. A dish the size of a laptop invites you to treat it like a laptop, and a laptop is exactly the kind of object that arrives at the other end with a cracked corner, a bent connector or a cable that stayed at home. Ask anyone who runs one on a boat, in a van or on a job site: the dish itself is tough, the kit around it is not, and the failure that ends a trip is rarely dramatic. It is a damp power brick, a crushed kickstand or a USB-C port full of sand. 📡
This guide is about the unglamorous part of Starlink Mini: getting it from A to B in working order. What is in the Mini kit, and what breaks
The Starlink Mini kit is small: a flat dish with the Wi-Fi router built in, a kickstand, a power supply, a DC power cable and, depending on the version, a mains adapter. The dish is rated for rain and dust and is built to sit outside for years. That leads people to assume the whole kit is equally robust. It is not.
- The dish face and edges. The phased-array panel is fine with rain and fine with cold; it is not fine with point impacts. A dish dropped on a corner, or a heavy object landing on it in a bag, can crack the housing or damage the array. It is also easily scratched by anything metal sharing the same pocket.
- The kickstand. Thin, folding, and the first thing to bend when the dish is packed loose.
- The DC connector. The weatherproof connector on the dish is designed to be plugged in and left. Repeated plugging in the field, with grit on the pins, is how it wears. A cap and a clean, dry cable end matter more than people expect.
- The power supply. A mains adapter that gets wet in a boat locker or crushed in a hold is the single most common reason a Mini stops working on a trip. Spare cables are cheap; a dead power brick in a place with no shop is a trip-ender.
- The cable. Long, easily kinked, easily forgotten. Every Mini owner has left one somewhere.
A case earns its place by solving all five at once: the dish cannot move, nothing touches its face, the kickstand and connector are in their own pockets, and the whole kit is dry. That is a foam insert, not a padded sleeve.
The 9 ways to carry a Starlink Mini
1. In a hard case with foam cut for the kit 🧩
The reference solution. A sealed hard case with a foam insert that has a pocket for the dish, the power supply, the kickstand and the cable means you open the lid, everything is where you left it, and nothing has moved. It is how field teams, sailors and film crews carry the Mini, and it is why we build inserts for it.

2. In a Peli 1510 or Air 1535 you already own, with the Starlink Mini lid organiser 🎒
Many of our customers already have a 1510 or an Air 1535 full of camera gear or tools and do not want a second case for the dish. The answer is the Starlink Mini lid organiser, part number LID1519SL, which turns the empty lid of a Peli 1510, Peli Air 1535 or Nanuk 935 into a padded, dedicated home for the Mini kit. The dish, power supply and cables live in the lid; the base of the case stays free for whatever else you carry. It is the cheapest way to make a Mini travel properly and it is the one we recommend to photographers and drone pilots who add a Starlink to an existing kit.

3. In a Peli 1510 or Air 1535 with your own foam or dividers 🔧
If you prefer to build the interior yourself, both cabin cases take the standard interior options: Pick N Pluck foam you cut to the dish outline, TrekPak dividers you trim to size, or a padded divider set. The Air 1535 is the lighter of the two, at under 4 kg empty, and the one to choose if the case will fly as hand luggage; the 1510 is the heavier, thicker-shelled standard that has protected equipment for two decades. 4. On a plane: cabin or hold? ✈️
The Starlink Mini dish contains no battery, so from a dangerous-goods point of view it is a piece of electronics like a laptop: allowed in the cabin and allowed in checked baggage. The power supply and cables are the same. What is not allowed in the hold is the power bank most Mini users carry to run it away from mains; power banks are spare lithium batteries and travel in the cabin only. The practical advice: carry the dish in the cabin. It is thin, it fits flat in a cabin case, and the hold is where dishes get cracked. The Air 1535 Starlink case is sized for exactly this: within the 55 × 40 × 23 cm format that most European airlines accept, with the caveat that Ryanair's priority sizer is 20 cm deep and a rigid case will not squeeze. Security screening occasionally asks what the dish is; a one-line answer, satellite internet antenna, no battery, has never caused us a problem. 5. In a car or van: power, heat and vibration 🚐
The Mini is the Starlink built for vehicles. It runs on DC, which means it can be powered from a 12 V system with the right adapter rather than through an inverter, and its draw is modest, typically in the tens of watts while running. Three things go wrong in vehicles. Vibration works cables loose and wears connectors, so the dish and its power supply should travel in foam, not on the dashboard. Heat in a parked vehicle in summer is bad for the power electronics; a closed case on the floor is cooler than the parcel shelf. And dust: a van living on unpaved roads fills every open bag with fine grit that ends up in the USB-C port. A sealed case with a pressure valve keeps it out, which is the reason the same cases are used for cameras on the same roads.
6. On a boat: salt, spray and the locker ⛵
Sailors were among the first to adopt the Mini, and the marine environment is the hardest on it. The dish itself shrugs off spray; the power supply does not, and salt on the DC connector pins corrodes them over a season. The rule on a boat is that anything with a connector lives in a sealed case when it is not in use, with a silica gel sachet inside, and the case lives somewhere it cannot slide across the cabin in a seaway. 7. On foot: the backpack question 🥾
The Mini's weight, a little over a kilogram for the dish, makes it a realistic thing to carry on a long walk, and for hikers, researchers and mountain huts that is its whole appeal. In a backpack the risks are the same as anywhere: something hard against the dish face, the kickstand bending under a water bottle, the cable disappearing. The cheapest fix is to keep the kit in the lid organiser from a Peli case and carry the organiser itself, padded, at the back of the pack against your spine. The better fix for a multi-day trip with weather is the iM2370, which is light for a hard case and can be strapped to the outside of a pack. 8. Powering it away from mains 🔋
Not a case question, but the one every Mini traveller asks next, so briefly: the dish runs on DC and is usually powered from a USB-C power bank with enough output, from a vehicle's 12 V system through a suitable adapter, or from a portable power station. Consumption is modest but continuous, so a small phone power bank will not last an evening; the power banks that work are the large ones, and those are exactly the ones that run into airline watt-hour limits and must stay in the cabin. Carry the DC cable and the mains adapter in separate pockets of the foam so that losing one does not mean losing both. 9. Cases for the larger Starlink kits 🛰️
Not every Starlink is a Mini. The Standard kit, with its larger dish and separate router, and the Performance kits built for business, marine and mobile use are heavier, larger and more expensive, and they travel in the hold or in a vehicle rather than in a daypack.
