Emirates is generous in the hold and strict in the cabin. Its checked allowance on most routes is the envy of European carriers; its hand baggage rule is one bag, 55 x 38 x 20 cm, 7 kg, and in Economy that is very nearly all you get. Add the shallowest frame of any major airline, a transfer at Dubai where every cabin bag goes through security again, and, since October 2025, some of the strictest power bank rules in the industry, and Emirates is the carrier where a European traveller's habits get corrected. The 10 things to know
1. The cabin bag: 55 x 38 x 20 cm and 7 kg in Economy 📏
One piece of hand baggage per Economy passenger, with maximum dimensions of 55 x 38 x 20 cm including wheels and handles, and a maximum weight of 7 kg. Both numbers are tighter than the European norm: 38 cm wide instead of 40, 20 cm deep instead of 23, and 7 kg instead of 8, 10 or 12. Emirates enforces the weight at check-in and often at the gate; it enforces the dimensions with a sizer less often but is within its rules to do so on a full flight.
2. There is no separate personal item in Economy 👜
This is the rule European travellers miss. Lufthansa, KLM and Air France give you a cabin bag plus a personal item. Emirates Economy gives you one piece, and a handbag or laptop bag is expected to fit inside it or to count as it. In practice a small handbag or a laptop sleeve carried in the hand is tolerated on most flights; a second bag, a backpack plus a case, is not, and will be gate-checked or refused. Duty-free purchases from the airport are allowed in addition, in the sealed bag. Plan for one bag, and put the laptop inside it.
3. Premium Economy, Business and First: what changes ✨
Premium Economy allows one piece of 55 x 38 x 20 cm at up to 10 kg. Business and First allow two pieces, a briefcase of up to 45 x 35 x 20 cm and a handbag or cabin bag of up to 55 x 38 x 20 cm, or a garment bag of up to 20 cm folded in place of one of them, with a combined weight of 14 kg. The figures are totals, not per piece, and the 55 x 38 x 20 cm frame does not grow with the cabin: a premium ticket buys you more kilograms and a second piece, not a bigger case.

4. The fares: Special, Saver, Flex, Flex Plus all include the cabin bag 🎫
Emirates sells Economy in Special, Saver, Flex and Flex Plus fares, and the difference between them is in checked baggage, changes, seat selection and miles, not in the cabin allowance. Even Economy Special, the cheapest fare with the smallest checked allowance, includes the same 7 kg cabin bag. This is the opposite of the European low-cost model and the same as Lufthansa; the thing to check on a cheap Emirates fare is the hold bag, not the cabin one.
5. The 7 kg limit and what it does to a hard case ⚖️
Seven kilograms is the number that decides whether a hard case makes sense on Emirates. A light polycarbonate cabin case at 2.5 kg leaves 4.5 kg for contents; a Peli Air 1535 at 3.95 kg leaves 3 kg; a Peli 1510 at roughly 5.4 kg with foam leaves 1.6 kg, which is a camera body and one lens. Emirates weighs cabin bags at the desk on most routes and at the gate on full flights, and the enforcement is reliable. Our honest advice: on Emirates, a Peli cabin case is for the equipment that justifies it, not for clothes, and the clothes go in the generous checked allowance where Emirates is at its best. For the arithmetic of a strict limit, packing a suitcase under 10 kg applies with three kilograms fewer.
6. The 20 cm depth: which Peli fits and which does not 🧱
Emirates' frame is 55 x 38 x 20 cm. Peli's cabin cases are 35 to 36 cm wide, which is comfortably inside the 38 cm, and 22.8 to 23.1 cm deep, which is about 3 cm over the 20 cm. On paper, therefore, the Air 1535, the 1510 and the ATX HC22 are all over Emirates' depth limit, the same situation as on Ryanair. In practice Emirates rarely uses a sizer and a 3 cm depth excess on a case that is under 7 kg is not what gate agents are looking for; but it is over, and a strict agent on a full flight is within the rules. The case that is unambiguously inside Emirates' frame is the smaller Peli Air 1485, at roughly 46 x 33 x 17 cm external, which trades cabin volume for certainty and for weight. If you fly Emirates often with equipment, the 1485 is the honest recommendation; if you fly Emirates occasionally with a 1535 or HC22 under 7 kg, you will almost always be fine, and you now know the risk.
7. Power banks: the rules changed in October 2025 🔋
Emirates introduced some of the strictest power bank rules of any airline from 1 October 2025. As we write, each passenger may carry one power bank of up to 100 Wh, it must have its capacity marked, it may not be used to charge anything on board and may not be charged from the seat power, and it must not be stowed in the overhead locker: it stays in the seat pocket or under the seat, where a fault would be seen. Power banks are never permitted in checked baggage. Spare lithium batteries for cameras and drones follow the standard international rules, cabin only with terminals protected, and Emirates' larger-battery approval process applies between 100 and 160 Wh. 8. Dubai transfer: your cabin bag is screened again 🛂
Almost every Emirates journey from Europe connects at Dubai, and every connecting passenger passes through security screening again at DXB before entering the departure concourse. That means the 100 ml liquids rule is applied twice, and the duty-free bottle bought in Warsaw or Frankfurt that was fine on the first leg can be confiscated at Dubai unless it is in a sealed tamper-evident bag with the receipt inside. Laptops and large electronics come out of the bag again. Pack the cabin bag for two screenings, not one, and keep the liquids bag and the laptop reachable without unpacking. 9. Full flights and gate-checking 🛄
Emirates flies A380s and 777s with large bins, so gate-checking for lack of space is rarer than on European narrow-bodies; gate-checking for weight is the Emirates version. A cabin bag found over 7 kg at the gate goes to the hold, tagged, free on most tickets because the checked allowance absorbs it, but out of your reach for the flight and through the same baggage system as everything else. The consequences are the ones we give for every carrier: batteries, valuables and anything fragile in the bag that stays with you, and a hard case with latches survives a surprise trip through the hold in a way a soft bag does not; what the hold does is in what really happens to your suitcase after check-in.
10. Where Emirates is generous: the hold 🧳
The reason the cabin rule is workable is the checked allowance: 25 to 35 kg in Economy depending on fare and route, 40 kg in Business and 50 kg in First on weight-concept routes, with piece-concept allowances on routes to the Americas. It is the most generous hold allowance of the major carriers, and it changes how you pack: clothes, toiletries and anything heavy go in the hold, and the 7 kg cabin bag carries only what must not be checked. How to pack for Emirates
- One bag. Really one. The laptop goes inside it, not in a second bag over your shoulder.
- Weigh it packed, at home, against 7 kg. Emirates enforces this one.
- Clothes in the hold. The checked allowance is large; use it, and keep the cabin bag for what cannot be checked.
- One power bank, under 100 Wh, marked, in the seat pocket, never in the locker, never used on board.
- Pack for two screenings. Liquids bag and laptop reachable at Dubai transfer as well as at departure.
- Duty-free liquids in the sealed bag with the receipt inside, or they do not survive the Dubai checkpoint.
- Depth under 20 cm if you want certainty on a full flight; otherwise know that a 23 cm hard case is over on paper.
